San Rafael Swell Trail Review
We had a great turn out June 26 – 27 at the San Rafael Trail Run! All types of rigs from a buggy to an FJ60 were spread out all over the trails.
We camped out the night of the 26th at The Wedge Overlook Campground. This place has some AMAZING views of the surroundings! The next morning around 9:00 am we rallied up and headed out down the Buckhorn Wash Trail head. This trail has some really cool sights to see including tons of petroglyphs and running into some wild mountain goats!

We continued down Buckhorn Wash headed towards I-70. At first we had planned on taking the Fuller Bottom trail, which is a lot faster, but the water level was surprisingly high and we were cautioned to avoid the area…so we decided to take the scenic route instead. Afterwords we headed around and up Devil’s Racetrack going South to North for some more awesome views of the canyon. Devil’s Racetrack is a 6 to 7 on the 10 scale. We didn’t run into any problems and the rigs handled exceptionally well. There were plenty of places to stop and take pictures and eat along the way; and the trails were challenging enough to keep it interesting.
On the return, we doubled back then headed back up through ‘Fix-It Pass’. The name comes from the fact that this trail is washed out so often that every time you go down it you have to ‘fix-it’ yourself. We like to keep the names simple around here…
As we were fixing the path we ran into a pretty good sized boulder section where we encountered a few obstacles that we had to get over. Luckily we brought some of our Teraflex winches to help us out!

We also had a JK almost slip off the side of the canyon wall. It would have been quite the plunge down a few hundred feet. Luckily we hooked ‘em up with a winch on the front and one on the back and drug the rig back onto the trail, talk about team work!
We had a great time on this run! Thanks to everyone who participated and helped us make it a success! We hope to see you all on our next run.
